My Experience

I have been counselling since 1996 and since that time I have gained tremendous experience in the range of issues I have encountered.  The age range of clients I have seen is from sixteen to ninety years old.

I have had my own private counselling practice for fourteen years during which time I have gained considerable experience in the many different issues detailed on the right.

I worked as a volunteer bereavement counsellor for approximately five years.  In addition I was a volunteer counsellor for the mental health organisation MIND for over eight years.  The counselling I offered at MIND was all short term work and thus I accumulated a considerable amount of experience in brief solution focused therapy.

I was at the York Clinic at Guys Hospital for approximately eighteen months.  This clinic specialised in sexual and relationship problems.  I was thus able to gain experience working with clients experiencing sexual difficulties such as erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation loss of libido as well as relationship issues.

I have an interest in working with clients who are experiencing relationship difficulties be it the stresses and tensions within a relationship or the ending of a relationship.

Personal Approach

My approach to counselling is based on the Person Centred Approach and is therefore very much based on the quality of the therapeutic relationship.  I believe that it is the quality of the relationship between the client and the counsellor that determines a positive outcome for the client.

A good relationship is built on trust, mutual respect, a good rapport and honesty and integrity.  My goal is to bring all these qualities into my work with my clients.

I am also trained in CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and where necessary I use ‘tools’ from this approach for the benefit of my client.

My work with couples is based on an integrative approach and I use ‘tools’ from different therapeutic approaches where appropriate for the clients.

I can work with a female therapist, we can work together with couples offering a therapeutic couple to couple therapy.  Working together helps to create an environment that neither of the clients feel threatened on a gender basis and helps to maintain neutrality. In addition we bring a wealth of different but valuable experiences into the counselling room.
