Counselling is a useful tool to incorporate into your life if you have any mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, stress and grief. The 10th October 2020 marked World Mental Health Day to break the negative stigma associated with mental health.
However, the taboo of mental health still exists despite many of us increasingly speaking about our own mental health. Counselling is nothing to be ashamed of and can help with relationship and behavioural issues you may have in your life.
It is important for all of us to have someone to talk to who is willing to empathically and non-judgementally listen to you in a safe space. A counsellor is trained to help you talk about and connect with your feelings and to explore coping strategies for both now and the future. Counsellors have experience in listening to any and all subjects that may cause you distress, no matter how taboo they are.
Here are five ways you can benefit from counselling.
Viewing your thoughts from other perspectives
Once you have released your inner thoughts and emotions so they are out in the open, it will allow you to view them from other perspectives. Counselling will help enable you to learn about other ways to consider your problems and will assist you in having tolls and insights on how to address them.
Time dedicated to confronting your feelings
We are all often caught up in our own lives and only begin to overthink and feel down when we are supposed to be our relaxation period. Seeing a counsellor will mean dedicating time aside for you to tackle your feelings with support and not alone. You will feel less inclined to discount your feelings when you are speaking to a counsellor so you can be sure to address those feelings and not be distracted by “life”.
Improve your physical health
Your physical health and wellbeing can also be improved by focussing on your mental health. It is a two-way process and benefits you can gain from having counselling is an increase in energy and stamina. As well as this, your sleep and appetite can improve. All this can make you have a more positive outlook on life and feel better in your own skin.
Not feeling as alone
Being able to share your feelings with someone who will caringly listen can reduce your feeling of isolation and loneliness can make you feel less ashamed and embarrassed to tell your friends about your struggles. Counsellors are neutral and are non-judgmental so having a platform to discuss anything you are worried about can really allow you to feel like you have the support of someone who understands you.
Finding everyday life easier
Talking with a counsellor will assist you in coping more easily with your life. It can be a big relief to off-load that heavy weight you have been carrying. Knowing you have someone to talk to is important to get through the difficult days. Having a safe space to speak about your problems will help many people to build tools and strategies to better manage and allow them to focus on living their lives, goals and dreams.
